game wikia, history up to Kisara's canonpoint
Her wiki is thin so here are some added details:
Kisara doesn't talk a lot about her past when it isn't about Migal, so details are sparse. She grew up a Dahnan slave in Viscint (capital of Elde Menancia) for most of her life, suffering under the rule of the Renan Lord who came before. She alongside her elder brother Migal worked hard to survive, every day a struggle, facing hunger and loss, learning every skill they could master that might someday save their lives. They helped to take care of the younger children left unattended, due to their parents either doing slave labour or having died at the hands of the Renans overseeing the slaves' work. Their own parents were victims of the cruel regime.
By some miracle they managed to live long enough to see changes in their country. Within the last seven years or so, Lord Dohalim took over leadership in Elde Menancia, and while the Dahnan slaves were not freed on paper, they were given a handful of crucial human rights that shifted the tone for the entire city over time. Dahnans were still labourers but paid for their work, were no longer abused or assaulted by the Renan guards, and were given the sort of respect that most Dahnans have not seen in 300 years. As a result, most citizens came to appreciate Dohalim's efforts to change their living situation, praising his benevolence, and Kisara was no exception. She pledged her loyalty and joined the city guard alongside Migal, training with mace and shield to become a formidable soldier. She rose through the ranks to become a captain and personally oversee the protection of Lord Dohalim. She grew to admire him for the way he's changed her home, and for a long time is his most steadfast defender, resisting whatever might threaten the veneer of peace they'd found for themselves at last.
Elde Menancia thrived under Dohalim's rule, but secretly, Dahnans were still suffering, and Migal eventually was framed and arrested for an attempted assassination while trying to warn Dohalim of a plot one of his attendants was hatching. He escaped to start a resistance group, but Kisara only heard the public side of the story and it caused a falling out between the two, as she was still loyal to Dohalim.
After Alphen's group arrived in the city and met with Dohalim, Kisara followed them as they met with Migal and were taken to the resistance headquarters so Migal could explain himself. They convinced Dohalim to join them in inspecting the "medical center" at the back of the quarry, only to find that it was in fact a vast silver lake, the resting ground of seemingly thousands of Dahnans who have died due to the "hollowing", where one's body is so drained of astral energy that it ceases to exist in any form but a reflective liquid nothingness. He proves this by eating a fruit and dying to this hollowing, a death that Kisara neither saw coming nor could endure quietly. Her grief caused Dohalim to lose control of himself, and after the party defeats him, he confesses that he only changed the way Menancia worked so their suffering wouldn't trigger his past trauma, out of selfishness rather than benevolence. Between her brother dying and her faith in her lord shattering, Kisara expresses her hatred and nearly strikes him down, demanding he leave her sight.
Dohalim's attendant Kelzalik started an insurrection and took over the palace while Dohalim was absent and Kisara was still recovering from her brother's death. Kisara was encouraged to join them in fighting off the rebellion, and together they defeated Kelzalik, with Dohalim joining them at the last minute. Menancia is freed, and Kisara (after some time away to think about what she wants to do next) opts to travel with the party, to continue protecting her home from the outside, so those within could continue to live in peace. She is determined to see the situation of the world with her own eyes, as well as watch what Dohalim does from now on. Her resentment is far more muted, as she's able to see clearly that the world won't change through hatred.
Personality:
Kisara acts as defender, caretaker, and voice of reason as they journey around the world. First and foremost, she is a motherly type. She cooks, she cleans, she cares for those around her in numerous ways, both physical and emotional. She can act as a bouncing board for ideas when people are struggling with something, she is often the voice of reason when emotions are running high or the team is struggling with a decision they need to make. She fusses over finances and protests (vehemently!) if the group spends a lot of money all at once, even for necessary equipment, as if she likes to keep a nest egg on the back burner; she even lectures and gets aggressive when money is wasted on trivial things without consulting the whole group. And when someone she cares about is in danger, she responds with all the ferocity of a mama bear and moves in to defend them.
"Protective" is one of the best words to describe Kisara, manifested literally in the giant shield and suit of armor she bears at all times. Many of her abilities are defense-focused, and her special ability will stop an enemy's charge dead in its tracks. She is often among the first to step in front of others (beaten out only by Alphen, probably).
Kisara worries that she lacks sufficient worth if she's not filling a void and performing a duty that no one else can or will fulfill. Upon joining the group, she wonders to Alphen what her contribution is, not accepting his simple answer of combat ability, and is quick to seize the unfilled role of caretaker when the party discusses their sad attempts at regular meals. As the rest of the team grows more capable over the course of the game, she begins to question if she can offer anything. As she says, "They don't need me for chores or fighting anymore. And I don't have much in the way of feminine charm... aside from being a soldier, do I have anything else to offer? And if not, then what good am I?" She has a similar worry when Dohalim grows more independent and starts to develop away from the spoiled, ignorant lord persona he'd demonstrated for most of the journey. She wonders if she is needed or if her uses are limited when others don't have to depend on her as much.
Kisara wrestles frequently with her status; she grew up as a slave, spent the last several years serving Dohalim as a knight, and only in recent months has she started to reexamine how she should be behaving around others, and how to set herself on more equal level to those who used to be above her in social status.
Being trained as a guard in Menancia's military, Kisara values good health and hygiene a great deal. She doesn't generally put up with unkempt or dirty clothing on those around her, even if she has to do the washing herself to take care of it. She will frequently take initiative to take care of clothes and equipment. She openly admits that she likes helping out, and even if she doesn't like the chores that need to be done, she gets anxious if she doesn't do them. Equipment maintenance is part of her routine and she shows no sign of wanting to shake these habits, though she does agree to tone it down for the group when they protest her... enthusiasm.
She talks about her brother, Migal, a lot. She loves and looks up to him, and when he died, it was the only time that she showed any rage or resentment towards the Renans, specifically Dohalim, or let herself express emphatic grief at a given situation. She is usually the calm and collected one, but when it comes to Migal, her behaviour grew more emotionally driven and volatile than sensibly thought out, for better or worse. If not for Alphen's interference, she may well have followed Dohalim's temporary wish for death and killed him herself. Migal was her idol, and the dream he died trying to achieve is what drives her to calm her anger and join the group, not only for the realm's sake or to watch how Dohalim changes, but also for herself.
She sees herself as a dreamer, as Migal says, though Alphen amends that she's more of an idealist. She has a lot of hope for the future and works hard to try and make that hope into a reality. On the other hand, the idealist part of her is what led to her distrusting Migal after he was accused as a rebel; she so vehemently wanted their paradise to remain untainted that she couldn't accept the reality that he might have been doing something for the benefit of the city instead, even though she trusts and loves him more than any other. She blames herself for his death to an extent, for not trusting in him, and is trying to carry his dream for him now that he's gone.
Abilities & Inventory:
Kisara doesn't have much in the way of magic ability, as most of what she can do is purely physical techniques with her shield/mace or accompanying martial artes, with which she has excellent proficiency. Here is a list of her arte abilities. Some noteworthy specifics with magic-adjacent effects:
-Crescent Moon/Maximum Burst/Lunar Arc = a few variants where the impact of her weapon causes stones to burst up from the ground
-Slag Assault = the impact of her weapon causes a portion of the ground to break apart beneath the enemy
-Falling Storm = she can spin her shield and form a small tornado
-Dazzling Spin = attacks with a pillar of light
-Guardian Field = a shield attack with a very slight healing area side effect
-Fierce Guardian = a large wall of light made to halt an enemy's charge
Also noteworthy team attacks that involve more than just smashing on her part, with her castmates:
-Divine Phoenix Cyclone = big explosive tornado of blue and red light energy surrounds a foe (Alphen)
-Mass Devastation = calls larger stalagmites from the ground to trap an enemy (Law)
Mystic Artes (aka special attacks)
Flare Demolisher = the impact of her thrown shield summons a wave of fire
Final Player = manifests a burst of energy in the form of a lion's howl, strikes repeatedly, then blasts an enemy with a stream of blue light
Her map action is a shield arte that can purify the air and dispel difficult environmental barriers blocking someone's path. (eg. poisonous smoke) Anything is nerfable to fit events as needed.
Kisara will bring with her the suit of armor she wears, along with the accessory that contains her shield and mace (can be summoned with astral transference tech). Her fishing rod and the handful of lures she usually carries would be nice, but if there is a limit to what is allowed, it's fine to leave out!
Suitability & Plans:
Kisara is a character who, even late in the game, is still trying to figure out what she wants to do for herself, rather than for those around her. So much of her life has been in service to others - as a slave, as a knight, and finally, as a member of the party who took on a lot of the extra caretaking work - that the idea of living for herself and finding her passions is something that makes her feel anxious and unsure. My goal is for Kisara to branch out more, discover new passions, and find a new path in life, even if it's in a new world. Getting to explore more of her history that isn't addressed in canon is also something worthwhile, as she has a grim history that doesn't get much attention. Filling out a cast and playing with her friends is a big bonus, of course.
She is more of a follower than a leader, so while she might not plan things for herself often, she is quick to volunteer herself for extra work. The nice thing about Kisara is that she thrives on being useful, so as long as there are people around her who need help, she'll always have something to do. Someone might actually need to tell her to sit down and relax sometimes, she'll try to have her fingers in so many different pots.
