Name: Athrun Zala
Canon: Gundam Seed (Destiny)
Canon point: Gundam Seed Destiny episode 37
Age: 18
History: it is I, a wiki link
Personality:
positive:
-Athrun is even-tempered for the most part, generally remaining calm in the face of other, more volatile or expressive personalities, though of course he has his moments of anger, grief, and frustration. He often strives to be the voice of reason when people around him are upset. He can be compassionate as well, but generally strives to find a balance between compassion and realism. When he is allowed to be himself, rather than whatever the world expects him to be, he prefers kindness; he treats Lacus with respect and builds presents for her that she likes despite their engagement being arranged, he visits the parents and graves of friends who have passed on, and after he joins ZAFT in Destiny he tries repeatedly to convince the Archangel crew to retreat and avoid combat rather than engage them as the enemy, regardless of the orders he's been given. His indecisive kindness in both series puts him in dangerous positions, as those he foolishly trusts end up betraying him.
-He is very professional and encouraging as a leader, acting as a mentor to his subordinates; at times he may hesitate to offer advice, but when asked he freely gives it. Other times he'll give criticism and corrections whether the recipient wants it or not, recognizing the need for improvement in others as much as himself.
-He tends to be focused when he has a goal in mind, working towards it with the appearance of conviction which draws others to him and earns him the admiration of (most of) his peers and superiors. This also makes him stubborn, but it is a strength that helps him earn a reputation as an ace pilot and a solid choice for a squad leader in both series. He is tenacious in the face of adversity, which paints a target on his back when he is no longer deemed "useful" by those in power, like his father and Durandal, but when push comes to shove he will refuse to be only a tool used for his abilities, without believing those actions to be right, once he realizes he is being taken for a ride.
neutral:
-Athrun has a habit of being earnest even when it might be unwelcome; he says it like it is, even if the truth hurts. This trait is more neutral, as it can be a good thing in situations where a harsh truth is merited, but a bad thing when compassion or regret is called for. He also does not necessarily have the social skills required to know which of the two options would be best at a given time (or if the third option of keeping his mouth shut would be ideal instead).
negative:
-he is socially awkward; he doesn't usually know what to say or how to lead a conversation if he's not talking about work or something he's interested in. He tries harder with those he cares about, and tends to apologize for his awkwardness because he recognizes this flaw, but knowing it exists doesn't help him fix it. He's better than he used to be.
-Athrun is trusting and easily led astray by authority figures. In both series he resists the urging of his friends to fight for peace rather than his side's victory in the war, believing that winning would be the just and right resolution. It is only when he starts to recognize the flaws in those authority figures (his father's genocidal nationalism and Durandal's deceptive, fanatical methods) that he starts to switch sides and follow his own beliefs, but he makes this mistake twice and pays for it through arrest and injury before he's able to get free.
-When his ideals are questioned, he can become pretty indecisive, flip-flopping between what is right and what is expected of him. Raised with high expectations from his father, and having spent a year and a half diligently serving the ZAFT military, he's learned to be obedient despite internally questioning what he's being ordered to do, especially when it conflicts with his personal life (eg. being ordered to kill his best friend because he joined the opposing side). When confronted by those who carry more conviction in their beliefs, all he can do is fight them and walk away since he lacks that same conviction but can't bring himself to disobey until he is cornered. Also, this indecisiveness has pushed him to become dangerously self-sacrificial at times. He has a habit of blowing up his mobile suits to solve his problems, and at least once was ready to die with that suit until Cagalli convinced him not to give up on life like that.
Powers/Abilities:
Athrun has no powers, but as a Coordinator, AKA a genetically modified human, his abilities are top-notch as far as humanity goes. Superior reflexes, physical capabilities, speed, hand-eye coordination. He's immune to almost all diseases and rarely ever gets sick. He heals quickly from injuries, and has excellent pain tolerance. Even amongst fellow Coordinators, he earned top scores in just about every category. He's been trained as a soldier for hand-to-hand, melee weapon combat, and marksmanship, among other things.
He has the ability to activate "SEED mode", which equates to a period of time where his reflexes and capabilities are further enhanced across the board, though it generally kicks in during high stress situations when he is at his most focused state, rather than something controlled. (Like a more advanced adrenaline rush.)
He's a very skilled mobile suit pilot, able to quickly adapt to various units without previous experience piloting them. Since childhood he's been building and maintaining small robots, so his repair and programming skills are excellent.
Regret: Athrun regrets not joining Kira and Cagalli on the Archangel when they met in secret during the second Alliance-PLANT war. Deceived and manipulated by Durandal, he grew to question his decision after the supposed death of his best friend at the hands of his ZAFT allies, and was framed by Durandal and forced to defect before he could make a decision himself. He now believes this got him killed, along with an innocent girl who tried to help him. If he'd joined them sooner, maybe those deaths could have been avoided, more lives on both sides of the war would be saved, and he would not feel as if he'd abandoned the people he loves. (His regret ocurred episode 25, if that is relevant.)
