Character name: Messer Ihlefeld

vartex
Series name: Macross Delta
Canon notes: Canon point is after episode 10
Species: Human
History:
Basic history is here:
-two years pre-series, Messer (then a soldier on his home planet) was subjected to a Var Syndrome, an infection that causes one to go berserk and violently attack those around him. Kaname Buccaneer’s singing brought him back to himself, and he was rescued by Arad Molders, a leading member of the Ragna division in the Chaos military contract organization.
-Messer joined Chaos as a member of Delta Squad, the piloting team charged with defending the Walküre singing group, under the condition that he provide periodic vitals to make sure his Var Syndrome is still inactive.
-By series start his rank is First Lieutenant and he is the second in command of Delta Squad, in charge of directing trainees, supervising, and overseeing the improvement of the team’s flight abilities on top of regular command duties.
-During a Walküre concert, the planet is attacked by the Aerial Knights, and the planet Windermere declares war on the UN. In the battle Messer battles the leader of the Knights, Keith AKA the White Knight, and they develop a rivalry.
-As the war progresses, Messer’s Var Syndrome makes a comeback, resulting in him nearly losing control while in flight and attacking wildly. He is brought back by Walküre’s singing, but is discharged from Delta Flight and transferred away from combat, intending on becoming a trainer at another base.
-Instead of transferring, he follows Delta Flight to the planet Al Shahal and protects Kaname from the attacking Knights. He battles Keith as Kaname sings to keep the Var Syndrome from overwhelming him, and he uses it to strengthen his abilities in the fight, until Keith shoots through his cockpit and Messer is killed.
Personality:
As first glance Messer is the classic stern, stoic, cranky trope of a person, impossible to please and quick to judge or scold. He does plenty of that, his attitude clashing with the rest of his crew and companions, and when he’s not doing that he’s doing his best to avoid them and keep to himself. A perfectionist at heart, he’s always striving to improve not only his own performance but those around him.
He has no tolerance for insubordination- he’s a soldier through and through, and Hayate’s casual attitude about flying angers him. He frequently chastises the newer pilot and reports Freyja for going along with his disobedience on at least one occasion. He’s also a hypocrite in that regard, however, as when he’s transferred out of Delta Squadron he rebels against the order and joins one last battle.
A lot of his personality is gleaned from the observations of those who knew him:
“The way he flies gets to me” - Messer’s strength and abilities wins the respect of many people, even those who hate or resent him- Hayate and Keith both feel that way and still indicate that they admire his skill in some way. His hyper-critical nature and precise movements causes this resentment and admiration in equal measure.
“He's not happy being just a training officer" - Hayate recognizes the unlikely chance that Messer will quietly retire from piloting and accept a teaching position. This is an observation Messer proves true- and a decision that causes his death.
“He must have loved flying” - Freyja notes that Messer kept careful logs of errors made in the maneuvers of his teammates because he loved to see them in the air and wanted them to improve. He carries a great passion for the art of flying his mecha, and this passion shone through in how carefully he maintains his equipment. He’s meticulous in how he uses it to ensure it works at top condition, requiring minimal repair.
“He might have been trying to keep his distance.” Arad states that Messer avoided letting others get too close to him so they wouldn’t care or hesitate to kill him if his Var infection took over. He’s always held the belief that once someone attacks you, even if infected and out of control, they become an enemy and you should mercilessly cut them down rather than risk letting them hurt someone else. This belief applies equally to him. He’s also able to get past this issue the night before he dies- it's subtle but he hints at it when Hayate asks why he agreed to join them during the jellyfish festival- simply put, they "won't be [his] subordinates anymore", so he can join them. Since he won't be on the team any longer, they won't be at risk of having to kill him, so he can enjoy their company for one last night.
Abilities: Physically Messer is a normal human with normal human abilities
He is an exceptionally skilled pilot, arguably better than even his captain within the Delta Squadron. His fine attention to detail and critical eye makes him the ideal commander for the team and head of training and improvements for the lower-ranking pilots
He has enough developed talent in piloting that even when his Var Syndrome takes over and he falls into a berserker mode, he can skill control his flight path and dogfight nearly on par with the enemy army's top-tier pilot, though he does inevitably lose the fight.
Speaking of- it’s less of an ability and more of a condition, but when Messer gets overstimulated (typically through combat but it happens via nightmares or extreme emotional moments) his Var Syndrome can trigger. When he fully transforms he loses control of himself and becomes instinctually violent, attacking anyone in his path. Those with the Var are more or less fueled by pure adrenaline, their muscles growing exponentially, speech patterns suppressed. He’s a force to be reckoned with in this state, though it doesn’t end well for anyone involved. (This condition can, and will, be suppressed as much as possible via the singing of his castmates.)
