🦋 Personality
Option 2:
- Dead Death is a persistent theme in Gustave's life. Since his birth, he has watched more and more people die every single year due to the Gommage. He sees the Gommage as a gentle violence, something that lures people into a false sense of security: if you know when your death is coming, you can plan your life accordingly. Yet it is violence nonetheless. Death is a source of trauma and determination for him. He's lost his parents, and more recently the love of his life. No one in his world gets to die from old age, and rarely from accident or crime. Only on the continent did he witness what it means to die violently, due to Nevrons and Renior's attack. He's been left horrified and traumatized by the events on the beach at the start of the expedition, and due to so much happening all at once, and believing himself to be alone in a hopeless situation, he almost chose death himself. He was ready to follow his companions to the grave, to take his own life. It's only through rediscovering hope by Lune finding him, and then them both finding Maelle, that he's able to find his will to really live again. He still struggles with PTSD, but the next time death finds him, he goes down fighting, rather than surrendering to his fate. As long as he has someone to fight for, he doesn't truly fear death. While he lives, he carries the dead with him, understanding the past while hoping for the future, and truly inhabiting the expedition phrase to learn from those who came before, and lay the trail for those who come after. He hasn't had a chance to cope with his own death yet; that will come.
- Friendly Gustave is known for being kind and friendly. Even to Esquie, basically the nicest creature in the whole continent, Gustave is considered the "super nice one" of their group. He tries to be reasonably friendly to the sentient beings their group cross paths with, though he may be awkward and low-key annoyed by some, he generally keeps a smile on his face and an optimistic attitude, believing it'll take them further than aggression or otherwise negative expression. He has a reputation in Lumiere for being a good man even among acquaintances of those he knows, and a lot of people know of him and are on good terms. He's apologetic if he thinks he's done wrong or offended someone, or been unintentionally rude, able to recognize his own poor behaviour. He really likes and prefers to stay on the good graces of most people. He's also willing and able to accept a peaceful option whenever possible. Even with Renoir, while it would not be called friendly conversation by any means, he fights to defend himself and Maelle, and tries to reason with the man to stop the fighting, even as he himself bleeds out from a wound he'd already received. The exception to this rule is, of course, the majority of Nevrons their party comes across. Creatures that attack his people will be attacked and if necessary destroyed. Yet even with them, the peaceful White Nevrons can be conversed with, and he's willing to help them. He hasn't written off the entire species, and won't attack first if not given good reason.
- Dance Gustave isn't shown to be much of an actual dancer, but he can be something of a showman, particularly with his combat expertise. In his last day in Lumiere with Sophie, he is invited to share a "dance" with her, dodging her attacks in a friendly spar. Satisfying the painter with his skill, their exchange is artistically represented by a painting of the two of them sharing an actual dance. His response isn't directly shown, but considering it's acknowledged he enjoys a good spar with Maelle, it's fair to assume he enjoys the experience and appreciates, like Sophie, that some part of them and their relationship will remain in Lumiere for a while, immortalized in a beautiful painting of their final dance. And, of course, the painter's acknowledgement that what they shared was a deep love, regardless of their actual relationship status. If there is one person he couldn't resist a request to dance with, it would be Sophie. And in the end he carried some regret that his stubbornness about the one thing he desired cost him four years they could have shared together until her Gommage.
- Child Gustave has had a lot of thoughts about children. In Lumiere it's a complicated situation; having a child means that unless an expedition succeeds, you're sentencing you and them to a short life together. By Gustave's generation, the parents will die before their children are adults, and the children will die in their twenties at best. Despite this, Gustave wanted to have children, as he hoped for a better future and believed that one day, things would change and no one would die from the Gommage again. This belief, and his inability to accept otherwise, caused his relationship with Sophie to deteriorate, and they broke up. The loss of her, and that dream he had to share a life and children with her, only made him more determined to change the world and at least give Maelle and his friends a future. His desire for children led him to become a foster parent for Maelle. As much as he sees her as a little sister, he also considers himself her guardian, ward, and as close to a father as one can get without a proper adoption. He sees the future in Maelle, and wants to protect her and do everything he can to let her live in that future. He wanted them to build it together, even if fate didn't allow that to come true.
- Flower Flowers are something of a trigger for Gustave; growing up in Lumiere means that every year, when the Gommage occurs, he has witnessed and himself done the ritual of handing over flowers to those who will disappear once the sun sets. Those he knew and cared for disappear into ashes and flower petals. It's ingrained in his culture, so he's gotten used to it over the years, able to be around flowers in general without too much issue. But very specific flowers remind him of that day year over year, and more recently, the single red flower he'd given to Sophie reminds him of the day he truly lost the love of his life. It can distract him, leave him quiet, forlorn, and dazed for a time, to the point that a sudden attack from a Nevron caught him entirely off guard. He's able to snap out of it and re-prioritize, but it was a momentary lapse he couldn't help. However, flowers are also a reminder of his mission, something that not only makes him think of the Gommage and all that came before but those he is yet trying to save through the expedition. It's very much a double-edged sword.
