❥ Folkmore Roles & Attributes
Skills:
-athletic: she used to be team captain for the Hexside Grudgby team, and was able to pick it back up with ease to help Luz. she's agile in a fight and can utilize both her physical abilities alongside magic to dodge, weave, and block incoming blows. she knows how to skateboard.
-dancer: she knows how to dance well and can improvise on the fly with a good partner
-baking: while the ingredients don't seem very appealing (thanks, Boiling Isles) she knows how to bake desserts
-studious: as a top student she's great at academics, very smart and devoted to learning
Canon Abilities:
A full list is here. Amity is a witch of the Boiling Isles, which means she has access to natural magic and can cast by hand, typically by drawing a spell circle. The strength of the spell depends on how big the circle is. Her specialty is Abomination magic, which is the ability to control abomination slime (or mud, if none is available) to animate itself into various forms, such as weapons, shields, traps, and fully mobile and semi-sentient golems. The golems are semi-sentient because they can act on their own if given instructions (eg. a golem could be asked to take care of Luz while she's sick, and acts accordingly by giving her tissues, food, etc) as well as be directly controlled by Amity. They can speak simple sentences and also respond to voice commands. Abomination goo can go a long way, it compresses and expands from a small pot Amity usually carries to create larger constructs.
Besides abomination magic, as a witch with no coven sigil, Amity has access to any school of magic that she learns. Some additional spells she's demonstrated:
-fire spells (big and small)
-disintegration (small)
-barrier cage (an electrified fence, basically; large)
-mystic projection (detailed static illusions)
-plant magic (limited)
-voice disguise (imperfect, but mimicry enough to fool someone)
-staff summoning & flight (can summon palisman staff out of nowhere, provided she has Ghost, and cast spells with the staff or fly)
She also knows a handful of glyphs, mostly the basic symbols (light and plant especially). She can recognize a couple of the more complicated glyphs that Luz has drawn and is able to use them (eg. she knew on sight the invisibility glyph and knew it required a breathhold to work).
Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: Her wings are dormant until summoned; calling them out manifests each as her abomination slime spreading out on either side. They solidify into dark purple feathered wings with an ethereal liquidity to them, primary and secondary feathers tipped with crescent moons, and the patterns of several golem "eyes" over the surface, similar to a moth/butterfly markings. Her eyes sometimes glow the colour of her magic when the wings are out, and a small crystalized halo in the style of her Grom crown appears on her head.
Role Reasoning:
Amity at a different time in her life would likely be a Myth, the antagonistic, passive-aggressive bully for the main characters in the early parts of the series. Since befriending Luz, she's gone through a character arc of learning how to be a better person, earning Willow back as a friend by demonstrating the changes she's made to herself, standing up against her parents to find her own path. She's grown to be a group leader, as well as an earnest ally. She's determined and heartfelt, and while she is still learning how to be a good and honest person, she's well on her way thanks to her understanding friends. She was willing to reach out a hand in friendship to Hunter (then an antagonist himself) thanks to the growth she'd experienced.
❥ Personality
Option 1.
Amity started out as an antagonist; she was a passive-aggressive bully who, while trying to maintain her top student status and remain in good graces with the other high-class-family kids at Hexside, was rude and derisive towards those deemed beneath her. However it is revealed that most of her behaviour is a front to try and please her parents, and deep down she would much rather be a kind-hearted and caring person with genuine friendships rather than stay in a forced mean-girl troupe. She used to be friends with the girl she bullied the most, Willow, and she treasured that friendship, but her mother forced her to abandon that friendship, threatening to get Willow expelled if she rebelled against it, because her mother thought Willow's family beneath that of the prestigious Blights. Most of her bullying translated into mean-spirited teasing- it could have been worse, but her behaviour was still quite bad.
After befriending Luz, and gradually regaining Willow's trust, Amity has been able to shake free of her mother's control and developed into her true self. She's still smart and competitive, and carries a lot of pride in her potential, but now it is tempered with the understanding that she's done plenty in her life to be ashamed of, too, and she has a ways to go to make up for her past mistakes. She is determined to be a great friend and an awesome girlfriend. She's sensitive and caring, she is attentive to the signals of worry and fear in those around her. She tries to give them space to share with her what's bothering them, but she's not afraid to put her foot down and outright request an explanation if their behaviour is hurting themselves or others, such as Luz keeping secrets about her return home to see her mom, or her irrational behaviour on the anniversary of her father's death. She has a lot of respect for those who demonstrate the ability to work hard, since it's something she's been pushing herself to do her entire life. She may have been boastful about her status as a top student, but she really did earn her way to the top. She loathes cheating and has no respect for those who won't play fair to compete with her.
Amity is still learning how to rebel against her parents, mostly her mother, who has for many years kept her on a tight leash to make sure she reaches the full potential Odalia dreamed up for her. She's taken steps to dip from under her mother's boot, and has let loose on her father who has been neglecting his children for a long time as well. Amity's grown a spine at last to face them and demand she be given the freedom to choose her own dreams and the people she associates with, when once she was compliant and submissive, miserably obeying their demands. Thanks to her devotion to Luz and her new friends, and the kindness demonstrated towards her again and again, Amity develops the strength to stand up for herself and others, recognizing just how wrong it is that her parents are mistreating her and helping the emperor. Her determination is enough to convince her father, though her mother remains unmoved. She becomes protective of her chosen family, which ultimately excludes her own mother in favour of her friends and siblings, those who actually care about her and want her to be happy. When she expresses worry over the choices she'd made lately, and how she used to not feel so confused or conflicted, her sister points out, "you weren't happy before". That's one of the catalysts for her changing her hair colour, which her mother always required to be dyed green like her own.
The idea of reaching one's potential means a lot to Amity; she would have been drawn subconsciously to the promise of reaching that potential outside of the influence of her strict parents or the expectations of school and society. She wants to learn how to be a better person, a better friend, a better girlfriend. She longs to discover what it is she wants for herself, to follow her own path. When asked how she connected with her palisman, she stated that what made Ghost choose her is that she finally admitted her deepest wish: she doesn't know what she wants to be in the future, but whatever it is, she wants to choose that path herself. Being in Folkmore will be a good place for her to think about her future, her wishes, and maybe find that path somehow.
