vartex: axiality (I could never keep up)

[He's started to feel dizzy the last several minutes, the shape of her body up ahead wavering and doubling in his vision, so it's a blessing that he's no longer leading the path. She's become his focus, the only thing that keeps him moving. Thank god she's here; if he was alone he's not sure he'd have made it.

When she calls for his attention he doesn't stop, but he manages to let his eyes rove away from her to the break in the treeline. Is that a house? It looks like it might be. Or three houses. But there's also three Kanames, so he can't really be sure. He almost stumbles once more in his eagerness to get there, but her arm around him keeps him stable, and he just barely manages to keep up. Stairs... of course there would be stairs. Damn this planet and its wet everything. It's lucky they didn't show up in the middle of flood season.

Step by step they work their way upwards, the weight of the bags on him and the weight of him on her. The stairs have a rail, at least, so he's able to keep some of the burden off of her and on the wood instead, but it's slow-going regardless. It feels almost like he's about to break when at last, at last they reach the door and Kaname's able to knock.

Within a few moments the door opens to a Voldorian woman who is surprised at first, but calms very quickly and ushers them inside, glancing out before she closes the door behind them. She exclaims at the state of them (more him than her, he's assuming, if he looks as bad as he feels, but they're both a mess of mud at this point), and guides her two wide-eyed children to take their gear off their shoulders ("don't touch those weapons, mind," she'd chided, spotting the boy's interest, and his grip on the machine gun tightens) before leading them to a bedroom tucked away in the back of the house. She starts talking about the current situation of the planet and safety but he honestly can't hear it anymore. He doesn't have the sense or the energy. Quietly he tries to pull free of Kaname and lets his back hit the wall, sliding down until he's on the floor, breathing heavily, eyes closed. He just. Needs to sit down.]
